Spectrum of the Depolarized Rayleigh Light Scattered by Gases of Linear Molecules

چکیده
The spectrum of the depolarized Rayleigh light scattered by a gas of linear molecules is calculated by a kinetic theory approach based on the Waldman-Snider equation. Collisional and diffusional broadening are studied. The line width is related to relaxation coeff icients which are collision brackets obtained from the linearized Waldmann-Snider collision term involving the binary molecular scattering amplitude and its adjoint. It is shown under which conditions the relaxation coefficients characterizing the line width can be compared with data obtained from SentflebenBeenakker effect and nuclear magnetic relaxation measurements.

On Light Scattering by Polyatomic Fluids
"Scattering equations" are derived which relate the spectrum of the light scattered from a polyatomic fluid to the spectral functions of the fluctuating spherical (scalar) and anisotropic parts of the electric permeability tensor. The influence of a constant external (electric or magnetic) field is considered. For a gas of linear molecules, it is shown that the fluctuations leading to the depol...
متن کاملTime Correlation Functions for Gases of Linear Molecules in a Magnetic Field
Time correlation functions for gases of linear molecules in a static homogeneous magnetic field are derived from the set of transport relaxation equations obtained from the linearized WaldmannSnider equation. In particular, the complex autoand cross correlation functions of the friction pressure tensor and the tensor polarization are considered. They are of importance for the viscosity, the dep...

Collision-induced light scattering (US) is a newlyidentified phenomenon which has increased the scope of the information obtainable about dense media by scattering methods [l-4]. While free, optically isotropic atoms or molecules do not depolarize light, an anisotropy can be induced in the total polarizability of a system of interacting atoms which produces a broad depolarized wing centred abou...

A novel approach to simultaneously measure the translational temperature, bulk velocity, and density in gases by collecting, referencing, and analyzing nanosecond time-scale Rayleigh scattered light from molecules is described. A narrow-band pulsed laser source is used to probe two largely separated measurement locations, one of which is used for reference. The elastically scattered photons con...
متن کاملINELASTIC LIGHT SCATTERING FROM THERMAL FLUCTUATIONS IN GASES by NOEL
We have studied the Brillouin spectrum of light scattered by the dilute monatomic one component gases xenon and helium and by the xenon-helium binary gas mixture. In a one component monatomic gas the scattered light spectrum for a scattering process with momentum transfer, K, and energy transfer, w, is proportional to the power spectrum, S(K, W), of fluctuations in the density of the gas. In a ...
